Armed Forces personnel, assets ready for monsoon floods


KUANTAN: The Armed Forces has pre-positioned assets and conducted simulation exercises to prepare for monsoon floods.

Its chief, General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar, said the armed forces is not responsible for flood management, but it will work closely with local authorities and other agencies.

“We have carried out pre-positioning strategies, identified troops to be mobilised in the event of floods and conducted simulation exercises.

“Commanders of army camps have gone to the ground to scout flood-prone areas.

“Pre-positioning involves determining areas and types of assets to be placed on standby for quick mobilisation when needed.

“Local authorities will take the lead. Our personnel will assist them during crises. We are ready,” he said after officiating at the Static Combat Parade and Dynamic Demonstration held for the 92nd Malaysian Armed Forces Day at the Royal Malaysian Air Force Base here today.

Nizam said about 600 armed forces officers and personnel have been deployed to assist in landslide and flood-affected areas in Sabah.

“The moment the state requested assistance, we deployed our battalions. We understand the scale of the catastrophe in Sabah and have been continuously monitoring the situation.”

Landslides in SabahLandslides in Sabah have claimed 13 lives and floods have killed one. The situation is improving.

Present were Army chief General Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan, Air Force chief General Datuk Seri Muhamad Norazlan Aris and Navy chief Admiral Datuk Dr Zulhelmy Ithnain.
