PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim wants the Malaysian Media Council to submit proposals to the cabinet to address regressive laws affecting media freedom.
The prime minister said MMC, which will regulate the local media industry, plays a crucial role in strengthening media freedom in the country.
“MMC has the responsibility of advising on specific legislation or provisions that restrict freedom. Convey these matters to the cabinet and (Communications Minister) Datuk Fahmi Fadzil to bring forward the relevant recommendations,” he said.
Anwar said this during a briefing with senior editors at the Seri Perdana Complex here.
Present were Media Prima deputy group managing editor and New Straits Times group editor Farrah Naz Karim, Berita Harian group editor Zulkifli Jalil and Media Prima Television Networks, News and Current Affairs group editor Azhari Muhidin.
Anwar said the recently established MMC will provide advice to the government on methods to enhance media freedom in the country.
“Not the Home Ministry; instead, let MMC advise us (the government) about the boundaries that need to be set,” he said.
