KUALA LUMPUR: Additional measures to strengthen the effectiveness of ceasefire monitoring operations between Cambodia and Thailand were discussed today, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He said that the talks took place with Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, following his earlier call with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet.
“In our discussion, we emphasised the role of the Interim Observer Team (IOT), which continues to closely monitor conditions along the border, while also exploring additional measures to strengthen the effectiveness of ceasefire monitoring operations.
“We also touched on the upcoming Thailand-Cambodia General Border Committee (GBC) meeting, scheduled for next month,” he said in a statement on Facebook.
Last month, Cambodia and Thailand agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire amid ongoing border tensions, with Anwar acting as host in his capacity as Asean chair.
Following the agreement, a GBC meeting was convened to oversee compliance with the ceasefire.
According to the Agreed Minutes of the Extraordinary GBC Meeting issued on Aug 7, both sides are required to avoid unprovoked firing towards the other’s positions or troops, which could escalate tensions.
