Anwar slams opposition for politicising key issues at Asean Summit

KUALA LUMPUR: As the 47th Asean Summit draws to a close, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ibrahim has criticised Opposition leaders who are politicising the visit of United States President Donald .

also criticised the Opposition for casting aspersions that Malaysia has abandoned the Palestinian struggle.

“We can shout here, but people are dying and being bombed in Gaza. We can insult Israel and be angry at the US, but this is our opportunity to share our views.

“At least, with the US’ intervention, the attacks have stopped, and they are also against the annexation of the West Bank.

“Is this absolutely effective? No, but at least the killings stop. People are being killed there, but we are so busy finding political stunts here,” said during a press conference as the 47th Asean Summit drew to a close on Tuesday (Oct 28).

In expressing dissatisfaction with the Opposition for distorting the issue, Anwar stated that he at least communicated Malaysia’s views to during the US President’s visit.

“I did it because I am the Prime Minister of Malaysia,” said Anwar.

“This is diplomacy. It does not necessarily mean shouting, but most importantly, I spoke about defending the rights of people in Palestine and Gaza,” added Anwar.

Anwar said the Opposition was not compelled to support him as Prime Minister.

“But, please support Malaysia when a national statement is made,” said Anwar.

Anwar then addressed another issue raised by ustads, where they accused him of allegedly kissing the cheeks of Louise Marcos, the wife of the Philippines’ President Ferdinand R Marcos Jr.

This was due to a picture taken of Anwar and Louise from a different angle.

“Some ustads in charge of religion should just ask me first. I did not even touch her.

“How can religious people just accuse me of being a hypocrite and committing adultery, without knowing the facts?” he asked.

Anwar said since the 47th Asean Summit began last weekend, Malaysia has become the focus of the world, given the presence of , Chinese Premier Li Qiang, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

“Malaysia was the focus of the entire world, but there are just two or three characters who are envious and jealous,” added Anwar.

Recently, Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Yassin accused Anwar of going overboard due to the welcoming ceremony for Trump on Oct 26.

said it was an excessive celebration given to Trump, given the ongoing crisis in Gaza.

The 47th Asean Summit and Related Summit drew to a close on Oct 28 after Malaysia handed over the chairmanship to the Philippines.
