KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 15 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he pays RM2.60 per litre for RON95 petrol, despite being eligible for the RM1.99 subsidy under the Budi95 programme, as part of the government’s effort to ensure subsidies are fairly targeted.
Speaking at the Finance Ministry’s monthly assembly today, Anwar said the move reflects the government’s commitment to social justice and sound fiscal management, ensuring assistance goes to those who need it most rather than being given universally.
“I pay RM2.60 per litre for RON95, even though I am eligible for a RM1.99 subsidy,” he said during the Finance Ministry’s monthly assembly here today, as reported by national daily Harian Metro.
He cited past subsidy reforms, including electricity and chicken, as examples of careful rationalisation that saved public funds without destabilising markets.
“We want to increase revenue, but if the people are burdened, what’s the point? This is not abstract theory — this affects real lives,” he said.
The prime minister stressed that targeted subsidies protect low-income citizens while making the national financial system more sustainable and transparent.
