IPOH, Oct 11 — Malaysia must progress as a sporting nation alongside economic, cultural and intellectual development, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today, a day after presenting what has been called a “people’s budget”.
He said national progress should not be measured solely through the economy, culture or intellect, but must also include sports as a key aspect of society.
“Yesterday, I spoke at length about sports, athletics, and the spirit of unity.
“I appreciate the contributions of our young people in sports and athletics, because this helps instill discipline, spirit, and unity. That is all I wanted to convey for National Sports Day,” he said at the launch of the National Sports Day programme in Meru here.
When tabling Budget 2026 yesterday, Anwar announced an allocation of RM580 million to develop Malaysian sports, including strengthening the Road to Gold programme and preparations for the 2027 SEA Games and Asean Para Games.
The prime minister said he had also instructed Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh to ensure continued support for the development of sports.
“I have ensured that Hannah Yeoh will observe and try to assist in whatever way possible — no matter how small or big the effort may be,” he said.
Anwar also reminded Malaysians to maintain the spirit of unity across all communities.
“I’m glad to see people from all races, especially Chinese, Malay, Indians, and even Kadazan, attended the programme today. Thank you,” he said.
About 10,000 people from all walks of life attended the programme.
