ISKANDAR PUTERI: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ibrahim has reminded Malaysians that the nation’s development and pursuit of economic growth must be anchored on moral values, integrity and compassion for the people.

He said while Malaysia continues to push for industrial and technological advancements, it must not neglect the human aspect of progress.

“Development is not just about tall buildings, industrial growth or profit margins. What we are building is ultimately for the people.

“If values and morals are eroded, then our so-called progress is meaningless,” he said in his speech during the closing ceremony of Ijtimak Perdana Agensi Agama Seluruh Malaysia 2025 held at a hotel here on Saturday (Sept 13).

stressed that technological sophistication, knowledge and skills are important, but they must go hand in hand with ethics and humanity.

“True strength does not only come from material wealth or advanced technology. It also comes from spiritual strength, values and character.

“This is why I continue to emphasise that in all our economic and development plans, the element of humanity and morality must not be sidelined,” he said.

added that history has shown that nations which neglected human values in the pursuit of power and wealth eventually crumbled under corruption, exploitation and inequality.

“When wealth is amassed but not returned to the people, when power is used for self-enrichment, society is left behind in poverty and despair. This is what we must reject,” he said.

He warned against leaders or institutions that allow greed to dictate policies, adding that Malaysia must set itself apart by prioritising justice and fairness.

“The people’s wealth must not be stolen, and public office must never be used to enrich families or cronies. We must put an end to such practices,” he said.

Anwar, who recently visited Sarawak, including Limbang, also highlighted the government’s focus on steering Malaysia towards higher-value industries instead of remaining dependent on back-end operations.

“We must move forward, not just as followers in low-end industries, but as leaders in high technology and innovation,” he said.

However, he reminded policymakers that industrial growth should not come at the expense of workers’ welfare.

“Companies and industries that generate billions in profits must also ensure their workers are fairly rewarded. Growth must not be enjoyed by a few while the majority struggle,” he said.

Citing sustainability and inclusivity as guiding principles, Anwar stated that economic plans must encompass all communities and leave no one behind.

“We must embrace inclusivity, not just in words but in practice. This is the essence of sustainable development,” he added.

The Prime Minister also called on religious institutions and agencies to set the highest standards in governance and service delivery.

“Islamic agencies must not only be the most efficient in religious affairs, but also models of integrity, technology adoption and professionalism. They must be examples for others to follow,” he said.

Anwar said Malaysia’s progress should be measured not only by global competitiveness indexes, but also by the nation’s ability to uphold dignity, unity and values.

“Let us ensure that while we build skyscrapers and industries, we also strengthen families, uplift communities, and nurture future generations,” he said.

He reminded that unity, guided by values and morality, is what will define Malaysia’s success in the years to come.
