KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will hold bilateral talks with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva today, ahead of the 47th Asean Summit.
Lula’s first official visit to Malaysia marks a new chapter in Malaysia-Brazil relations.
The two leaders are scheduled to meet this morning, the Prime Minister’s senior press secretary, Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, said in a televised briefing.
Both Malaysia and Brazil share aspirations in advocating for economic justice and global prosperity, Tunku Nashrul said.
He said the relationship was reinforced after the Prime Minister attended the BRICS Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro last July.
“Malaysia continues to bring a firm voice for the countries of the Global South, advocating for a fairer, more balanced, and sustainable international trade and financial system.”
The meeting between Anwar and Lula is expected to strengthen their commitment to explore cooperation in new fields.
The leaders are also expected to exchange views on regional and global issues, Tunku Nashrul said.
“The visit reflects the confidence and closeness of the Malaysia–Brazil relationship, based on mutual respect and a shared effort to strengthen South–South cooperation for the collective benefit of both countries and the region.”
Malaysia and Brazil established diplomatic ties in 1959
In 2024, Brazil was Malaysia’s second-largest trading partner in Latin America, with total bilateral trade amounting to RM20.36 billion (USD4.46 billion).
Malaysia’s exports included electrical and electronic products, palm oil, rubber and halal pharmaceuticals, while imports comprised ores, processed food and petroleum products.
