CYBERJAYA: The ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia was achieved because of the full support and solidarity of all Asean leaders, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
The Prime Minister thanked all parties who helped broker the ceasefire and support related efforts.
“I was able to do that because of the solidarity, commitment, trust, friendship and brotherhood of all Asean leaders.
“I think this is unprecedented and a remarkable feat (that) shows the strength, commitment and resolve of Asean leaders,” he said in his speech at the 58th Asean Day celebration at the Cyber Event Hall here on Friday (Aug 8).
“It is because of the level of trust and confidence that we’re able to… secure an understanding.
“I am told that, in the history of ceasefires around the world, in the past decades, if not centuries, this was probably the first ceasefire that worked quickly and effectively thanks to the support of everyone,” he said, to applause from the floor.
Themed “Towards an Inclusive and Sustainable Asean Future”, the celebration reflects Malaysia’s chairmanship priorities, gathering over 700 participants from across the Asean community, including government officials, diplomats, business leaders, scholars and youth.
