KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has defended the government against claims that it has sidelined the Indian community, stressing that various forms of assistance have been provided beyond the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra).
Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, he said the government had introduced several initiatives, including RM500 million allocated to the Indian community under the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) in 2022, which was later increased to RM972 million in 2025.
“To say that assistance for the Indian community only comes through Mitra is not true, as there are also many initiatives outside of Mitra,” he said during the Prime Minister’s Question Time at the Dewan Rakyat.
He added that the government had also introduced a Housing Credit Guarantee Scheme for the Indian community worth RM1.2 billion.
