Anwar engages Asean leaders over US tariffs, Myanmar over the phone


KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ibrahim today had a phone discussion with several Asean leaders regarding the United States’ tariffs and Myanmar.

He said in separate phone calls, he talked to the Sultan of Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Laos Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on important developments related to the region’s shared interests.

Regarding the retaliatory tariffs imposed by the US, he informed the leaders that Malaysia, through the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry, had engaged with US authorities to seek a fair resolution.

“As Asean chair, Malaysia is using its position to advocate not only for our national interests but for the collective good of all Asean member states.

“I stressed the importance of a cohesive Asean approach to safeguard the region’s long-term interests and economic resilience,” said in a Facebook post.

Meanwhile, on the Myanmar issue, he also briefed the leaders on his recent meetings in Bangkok with Senior General Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar’s State Administration Council (SAC) and U Mahn Win Khaing Than from the National Unity Government (NUG), in efforts to promote inclusive dialogue.

said all the countries were supportive of Malaysia’s role in advancing peace efforts in Myanmar and strengthening Asean’s unity in facing regional challenges.
