PETALING JAYA: Another lawmaker has fallen victim to AI-generated explicit videos.
Tebrau MP Jimmy Puah Wee Tse revealed that he received a deepfake pornographic clip featuring his face.
Puah said he received the video in his email at 5.30pm on Monday (Sept 15).
He claimed it was doctored using artificial intelligence technology and was clearly intended to smear his reputation and exert political pressure.
“This obscene video is fake and malicious. It is a cyberattack aimed at tarnishing my image as an MP and as a politician,” he said in a statement on Monday (Sept 15).
He added that several other MPs had also been targeted by similar politically-motivated cyberattacks.
He stressed that the trend was highly damaging.
“I urge the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to take swift action to protect our dignity,” said Puah, who is also Johor PKR vice-chairman.
Puah said he will lodge a police report and a complaint with MCMC on Tuesday morning (Sept 16).
He also called on the government to speed up the introduction of laws to curb the abuse of AI technology.
“Do not spread fake content. We must protect political integrity and our country’s democracy,” he added.
As of today, at least 12 lawmakers, including Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli, Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister Chan Foong Hin, Rafizi Ramli and Wong Chen, have reported receiving nearly identical emails.
The emails threatened to release AI-generated lewd videos of them unless they paid US$100,000.
Authorities have confirmed the images are deepfakes and said that the police and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission are investigating the matter.
