An animal rights group has urged the wildlife and national parks department (Perhilitan) to take action over a video showing the abuse of a monkey, believed to have occurred in Kelantan.
Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar Malaysia (SAFM) said it received reports about the video, which has been circulating on social media.
“We urge Perhilitan to take immediate action,” it said in a statement.
The video showed a man pulling the monkey by a thin string tied around its neck and holding it down. He was also seen slapping and hitting the monkey multiple times as it struggled to flee.
SAFM urged witnesses and those with information on the incident to come forward and assist with investigations.
“We also wish to remind the public that animal abuse is a serious offence under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010. Under Section 86, offenders may face fines of up to RM100,000, imprisonment of up to three years, or both,” it said.
The association said it would continue to monitor the case and ensure that the authorities act decisively and swiftly to secure justice for the animal.
