KUALA LUMPUR:

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim said the “biggest positive” in the Red Devils tumultuous season was the feeling he experienced in the team’s last game in Old Trafford.

“The feeling in the stadium is that the club is really alive and the strong belief that we can change things. That is the biggest positive,” he said at a press conference ahead of United’s game against the Asean All-Stars tomorrow.

Amorim said it had been a tough season due to the lack of trophies and its standing in the domestic league.

United last won a trophy after beating Manchester City 2-1 in the FA Cup in May 2024 under Erik Ten Hag.

This season, however, ended with great disappointment with a 15th place finish, their lowest-ever in the English Premier League.

Following United’s last match of the season on Sunday, in which they beat Aston Villa, Amorim publicly apologised to the club’s supporters.

He also vowed that the “good days are coming”, adding United is one club in the world that has proven in the past it could overcome any situation.

Amorim also said he felt that United was improving as a team.

“We have that lack of goals that punishes us in a lot of games, but we are improving in certain aspects of the game.

“But if you have to choose a positive, it is that feeling in the stadium with our friends that they believe we can overcome everything.”

Amorim also hailed the “incredible” fans, be it in Old Trafford or any other part of the world.

“No matter what the region, or the country, I have found that the passion for this club is amazing. They expect us to win and to perform.”

Developing young talent

Amorim also said there was a need to change the manner in which young players are managed, saying that sometimes, these footballers are put on a pedestal.

At other times, youngsters are pushed too much in the beginning, he said, adding such pressure was hard on these players.

“You have (to deal with) social media, you have all this pressure around the young kids that sometimes it’s hard to control,” he said when asked if there was any notable young player he was looking to introduce into the senior team.

As head coach, Amorim said his job was to provide the tools and the opportunity for the young players as well as “protect them” because United is a massive club.
