KUALA LUMPUR: Men’s doubles pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun continued their fine form following their rise to world No. 5 by defeating compatriots Arif Junaidi-Yap Roy King in the first round of the Hylo Open in Saarbrucken on Tuesday.
Wei Chong-Kai Wun were made to work hard before prevailing 21-16, 19-21, 21-16 in a 53-minute battle at the Saarlandhalle Indoor Arena.
After clinching the opening game, Wei Chong-Kai Wun were forced to regroup when world No. 18 Arif-Roy King mounted a strong response in the second.
They, however, regained control in the decider with composed net play and precise defence.
The victory extended their head-to-head record against Arif-Roy King to 6-0.
They reached their career high-ranking last week and marked their return to the World Tour after a two-week injury spell by reaching the quarter-finals of the French Open.
They will play world No. 15 Leo Carnando-Bagas Maulana in the second round on Thursday.
The Indonesians booked their date with Wei Chong-Kai Wun after overcoming world No. 28 Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi 21-16, 21-17.
