KOTA KINABALU: Malaysians in Sabah are invited to join in the Malaysia Day celebrations held at the Padang Merdeka here on Sept 16.
Early birds are in for a wonderful treat with not only performances lined up, but also stand a chance to win prizes such as a motorbike (grand prize), bicycles, washing-machines, smartphones, RM200 meal vouchers and grocery vouchers worth RM500 each.
State-level Malaysia Day celebration main committee chairman Datuk Seri Christina Liew said more than 120 fabulous prizes await lucky winners.
In extending the invitation for all to come and join in this celebration, she said Malaysia Day was a time to share joy and to feel the spirit of togetherness.
She said Malaysia Day was not just another event as it reminds the people of 1963, when Sabah, Sarawak and Malaya came together to form Malaysia.
“From that day, we became one nation and one big family. For the people of Sabah, this day is very important as it reminds us that we are closely connected,” said Liew.
She said this year’s theme, “Malaysia Madani:Rakyat Disantuni” emphasises that regardless of one’s background, culture or religion, everyone deserves respect, care and the chance to take part in the nation’s growth.
“That is the true spirit of Malaysia Day,” she stressed, adding that the presence of Malaysians in this event would not only make the celebration livelier but also show the strength of the people.
“This is because the people are truly the heart and soul of the nation, and with all of us together, Malaysia becomes even more meaningful,” said Liew, who is also the state Tourism, Culture and Environment minister.
According to her, this year’s celebration puts special focus on culture and public participation.
She said there will be vibrant local ethnic performances to showcase Sabah’s diversity, interactive exhibitions where people can experience things first-hand, and community activities to bring people closer.
“In a nutshell, it’s not just about watching a show, but also about joining in and feeling the spirit of ‘Caring for the People’ – a celebration by the people, for the people, and with the people,” Liew added.
Other things people can expect during this event is free Milo and ice cream for the public as well as balloons for children, and culminating in a fireworks display before the end of the celebration.
Those who wish to take part in the lucky draw may register themselves with the organisers during the celebration.
This year’s national Malaysia Day celebration will be held at the PICCA Convention Centre at Arena Butterworth, with a variety of exciting activities planned.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is set to officiate the celebrations at 8.30pm, which will be attended by Penang Governor Tun Ramli Ngah Talib, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
