Akmal urges asset screening for top civil service, political appointments

KUALA LUMPUR: Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh has called for the government to conduct asset screening on senior civil servants and politicians before appointing them to top official positions.

He said this after the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) seized luxury items worth RM2.2 million from the home of a woman linked to a senior army officer being investigated for graft, including 23 Rolex watches.

Akmal described the development as disheartening, particularly when some military personnel were still living in poor conditions at their camps, while certain veterans had to continue working after retirement to make ends meet.

“I ask the government to ensure that all officers or politicians, regardless of ministries (or agencies), are required to have their assets screened before they are appointed to an important role.

“Enough is enough,” he said in a Facebook post.

MACC is investigating an alleged army procurement cartel, with former Army chief General Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan and his two wives remanded to assist in the probe.

It is also looking into another senior armed forces official and the owners of 26 companies linked to military procurement contracts allegedly involving a senior army officer.

Several companies were believed to have repeatedly secured high-value military contracts since 2023 through bribes.

MACC was also reported to have seized RM6.9 million in gold bars and cash in foreign currencies, among others, in addition to the 23 Rolex watches and several jewellery items.
