KUCHING: A weekend outing turned tragic when a 21-year-old Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) man drowned while swimming with five friends at a waterfall in Giam, Jalan Puncak Borneo, Padawan, today.
A source said the victim was swept away by strong currents and went missing. His friends then immediately launched a search and managed to locate him about 20 minutes later.
“However, when found, the victim was already lifeless and was confirmed dead by paramedics who arrived at the scene at about 1.20pm,” the source said.
Padawan police chief Superintendent Mohd Irwan Hafiz Md Radzi, who confirmed the incident, said police received information from the public at around 12.06pm.
“Upon receiving the report, the police together with rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the scene.
“The victim, who was believed to have drowned, had been pulled out of the water by members of the public before being taken to Sarawak General Hospital,” he said in a statement today, without disclosing the victim’s identity.
