Norazlan Aris made history today by becoming the first commander of the Royal Malaysian Air Force to personally lead an air display in conjunction with National Day celebrations at Dataran .

General Norazlan, who was appointed the 21st air chief marshal last June, showcased his skills in an Su-30MKM twin-engine fighter jet, leading a formation of 30 aircraft from the armed forces, the police, coast guard, and the fire and rescue department.

Tens of thousands of spectators watched the display, breaking into applause and cheers as many captured the moment on their mobile devices.

Norazlan said he had performed similar air displays since his early days as an operational pilot flying the Skyhawk, MiG-29, Sukhoi aircraft, and Aermacchi MB339A.

However, today’s National Day air display carried a deeper significance. “I hope it serves as an inspiration that a leader’s role is not only to give orders but also to set an example and be a role model for subordinates,” he said.

“It is also aimed at assuring the public that military personnel at all levels are fully capable of carrying out the responsibilities entrusted to them,” he said.

Norazlan said that as a leader, he needed to be seen at the front lines with his men, which helps close the gap between commanders and subordinates and strengthens their bond.

“I believe my participation will boost the morale and confidence of RMAF personnel, showing them that I am not merely observing from the main stage but standing side by side with them, giving my energy and effort for the country,” he said.
