AI Nation 2030 Development, GovTech Initiatives Emphasised In 2026 Budget – Gobind Singh

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 8 (Bernama) — The Ministry of Digital will emphasise Malaysia’s development as an artificial intelligence (AI) nation by 2030, together with GovTech initiatives, in the 2026 Budget.

Its minister, Gobind Singh Deo, said the matter was discussed in a meeting with the Ministry of Finance ahead of the 2026 Budget, which is scheduled for Oct 10.

“We want to see an ‘AI Nation’ by 2030, with a strong emphasis on GovTech initiatives. We also want to establish a GovTech institution to enhance the government’s delivery of digital services to the community,” he told reporters after officiating the ‘AI for Good (Educator)’ Conference here today.

Gobind said the ministry is also focusing on cybersecurity and personal data protection in the upcoming budget.

He noted that the Ministry of Digital is currently developing the necessary structures to build and support a new digital ecosystem.

“Our priority is to secure allocations to establish these institutions in the near future and build an AI Nation by 2030,” he said.

He stressed that this request aligns with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ibrahim’s vision, outlined in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which highlights Malaysia’s ambition to become an AI nation by 2030.

Meanwhile, the inaugural AI for Good (Educator) Conference marked the official launch in Malaysia of the ASEAN AI for Good (Educator) Train-the-Trainer Programme.

According to a statement, the conference — co-organised by the National AI Office (NAIO), Meta, and AI Singapore — aims to equip educators at all levels with the essential AI knowledge and tools necessary to prepare students for the digital future.

Launched at the ASEAN level in October 2024, the programme aims to benefit 5,000 students across the region by 2025.
