ALOR STAR: Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan is among 6,832 graduates who will receive their scrolls at Universiti Utara Malaysia’s (UUM) 38th convocation ceremony from Nov 9 to 13 at Dewan Mu’adzam Shah, Sintok.
The Pontian member of parliament earned his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Communication after completing a thesis titled “Government Communication Strategy: A Study Towards Goods and Services Tax (GST) Implementation in Malaysia”.
UUM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Foad Sakdan said the convocation will be graced by the Chancellor, Sultan of Kedah Al Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah, who will preside over the first session.
“Of the total, 5,575 are undergraduates and 1,241 are postgraduates, including recipients of PhD, Doctor of Management, Doctor of Business Administration and Master’s degrees, as well as 16 Executive Diploma in Business Management graduates.
“The graduates comprise 6,317 Malaysians and 441 international students, mainly from Indonesia, China, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Somalia and Iraq,” he said during a press conference today.
He said this year, UUM will confer an Honorary Doctorate of Islamic Business Management on International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF) University chairman Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar, bringing the number of honorary recipients since 1988 to 55.
The Royal Education Award goes to Mohammad Noor Aiman Hassan Nudin from Tawau and Vianca Syam Shamlal from Kedah, while the Chancellor’s Gold Medal Award will be presented to Wong Yoong Wai from Seremban.
Recipients of the Royal Education Award will each receive RM7,500, and the Chancellor’s Gold Medal Award, RM4,000.
Among undergraduates, 1,339 achieved first-class honours. UUM will also celebrate 137 pioneer graduates from three new programmes, namely, Linguistics and Information Technology, Contemporary Literature and Creative Industry Management, and Applied History.
