KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) has confirmed receiving the full investigation report regarding cash seized and linked to former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and his political secretary Datuk Anuar Mohd Yunus.

In a statement Sunday (Sept 14), the AGC said the full investigation report was received on Sept 12 (Friday).

“The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has initiated forfeiture action without prosecution against the seized cash in accordance with existing legal provisions.

“The AGC emphasises that investigation and asset forfeiture proceedings, as well as criminal charges, are two separate aspects. Therefore, although the forfeiture action has been initiated by MACC, the AGC will thoroughly review the full investigation report,” the statement read.

The cash was seized by MACC on Feb 20.

The AGC said the review process of the full investigation report would be conducted from various perspectives, including evidence and elements required to prove the case, before any decision on criminal prosecution could be made.

According to the statement, any decision on the case will be announced once the review of the full investigation report is completed.

“The AGC remains committed to ensuring that every decision is made independently, transparently and in accordance with the law,” it said.

On Sept 9, MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki stated that the nearly RM170mil in cash seized by MACC and believed to belong to Ismail Sabri had officially become government property and had been deposited into the government’s account.

Azam said this followed the decision by the respondent, Ismail Sabri, not to contest the prosecution’s application for forfeiture of the cash. – Bernama
