Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan wants DAP’s top leadership to advise its youth wing not to act rashly, after it called for the party to cut ties with Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh.
Mohamad, also known as Tok Mat, said the law must be enforced fairly in the case of the upside-down Jalur Gemilang and cannot be focused on one party alone.
He said Akmal had already been summoned by the cops and the rule of law must be respected by all parties, Utusan Malaysia reported.
“I hope that DAP would advise their youth leaders to be more rational and not to act rashly, which would only threaten national stability at the end of the day,” he was quoted as saying.
Mohamad also defended Akmal’s gathering outside the Penang hardware store that allegedly flew the national flag wrongly, saying it was to make peace rather than cause chaos.
He maintained that flying the Jalur Gemilang upside-down was a very sensitive matter that cannot go unpunished as it could affect national harmony.
DAP Youth’s Penang and Negeri Sembilan chapters had urged the party to sever all ties with Akmal over the Jalur Gemilang issue.
Melaka DAP publicity secretary Kerk Chee Yee also said the party should not work with “individual politicians who don’t intend to build a harmonious and inclusive community” in the next Melaka state election.
Akmal had laughed off the threat and dared DAP to cut ties with him, saying such a move would inadvertently mean ending DAP’s relationship with Umno, a key partner in the unity government.
Akmal is being investigated for sedition, criminal intimidation, and improper use of network facilities over a Facebook video in which he allegedly made statements that could disrupt public peace.
The video in question was related to a hardware store owner in Kepala Batas, Penang, who was caught on video allegedly hanging the Jalur Gemilang upside down.
