Abu Bakar keeps door open for Pas in Perlis exco line-up

KANGAR: The Perlis state government has once again extended its invitation to assemblymen to join the new state executive council (exco), which is expected to be finalised and sworn in tomorrow.

Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah said the exco lineup would comprise four assemblymen from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), while the administration remains open to including representatives despite a directive from the party’s central leadership barring its Perlis assemblymen from joining the state cabinet.

“I received the view of the (party) president (Tan Sri Yassin) to extend the invitation to assemblymen even though we understand there is an instruction not to participate in the state Cabinet,” he told reporters after attending the Menteri Besar’s 2026 New Year address to Perlis civil servants here today.

Abu Bakar said a formal letter of invitation was also sent to Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang on Monday, in keeping with the cooperative ties maintained within the Perikatan Nasional administration.

He added that the new Perlis exco line-up is expected to be appointed and sworn in at Istana Arau tomorrow.

Earlier, Abu Bakar delivered his New Year address to more than 1,500 state and federal civil servants. Also present were former Menteri Besar and Sanglang assemblyman Mohd Shukri Ramli, Perlis PN chairman Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, as well as government and opposition assemblymen.

Previously, PAS central leadership said that it will not accept any exco positions in the new Perlis state government.
