Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg has been appointed as the new president of the Muslim Welfare Organisation of Malaysia (Perkim), taking over the post held by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad since 2006.
At Perkim’s annual meeting today, Mahathir was appointed as special adviser to the organisation, the Sarawak public communications unit reported.
Abang Johari expressed his appreciation to Mahathir for leading Perkim to where it is now, and setting an example when it came to propagating the faith and looking after the welfare of Muslims.
“Continuing the legacy he has left will not be an easy task, but with everyone’s support, I am confident that we can further bolster Perkim’s role in the landscape of modern propagation of Islam,” he said.
Abang Johari is also chairman of Gabungan Parti Sarawak, a key component in the federal unity government.
