KUALA LUMPUR: A1 Semi-Pro League team Perak secured a stunning 2-0 upset victory over top-flight Kuala Lumpur City in the Malaysia Cup first round, first leg match in Manjung on Sunday.
Goals by Ahmad Daniel Hakimi Ahmad Aznil and Fadhil Azmi either side of the break saw Perak take a healthy advantage to the return leg in Cheras on Jan 25.
Perak, who are preparing a squad for the Malaysia Games in Selangor later this year, shocked KL in the 11th minute through Ahmad Daniel, who outpaced KL left-back Syazwan Andik Ishak before slotting home.
Safawi Rasid’s header was pushed onto the crossbar by Perak goalkeeper Ahmad Syazwan Syazany Ahmad Shafei in the 27th minute as KL searched for the equaliser.
Ahmad Syazwan tipped over a floating shot by KL midfielder Zhafri Yahya just before the break as Perak led the Super League team 1-0 at half-time.
Perak extended their lead to 2-0 in the 54th minute when Fadhil left his marker Kenny Pallraj, playing as part of a second-string defence, for dead to head in to beat KL goalkeeper Quincy Kammeraad.
In earlier matches on Sunday, Penang edged Kuching City 1-0 at the City Stadium in Georgetown, thanks to a Douglas Coutinho winner in his debut, while Teto Martin scored a double hat-trick as defending champions Johor Darul Ta’zim hammered Police 10-1 at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri.
