MOSCOW, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) — Russia’s Federal Security Service has detained eight people in the country’s Republic of Bashkortostan suspected of plotting to sabotage communications infrastructure, the agency said Monday in a statement.

A local resident had corresponded on social media with a man who suggested that he set fire to cell towers and damage the fiber-optic cables used for data transmission, according to the statement.

The resident has identified the locations of the objects and the necessary conditions for confirmation in the form of video recordings of the sabotage acts, the agency noted.

It added that the suspect recruited an accomplice, who in turn involved six others in the plot.

All eight suspects were detained when attempting to carry out the sabotage, and a criminal case has been opened, the agency said.
