BERA: Eight Chinese nationals operating a scam call centre targeting victims in their homeland were detained at a hotel near Triang here yesterday.
The suspects, aged between 28 and 39, including two women, were arrested by a team of officers from the Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department together with Bera police.
They were detained in separate rooms at the premises about 2.15pm.
Bera police chief Superintendent Zulkiflee Nazir said the suspects, who had been working as call-centre operators, set up their base at the hotel last month.
“Investigations revealed they used the Telegram application to obtain information on potential victims and lured individuals in China to join an investment scheme.
“We seized 19 mobile phones and two laptops from the suspects. All of them have been remanded until December 1 for further investigations,” he said in a statement today.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a penalty of up to 10 years’ imprisonment, whipping, and a fine.
