8.7 magnitude quake prompts tsunami alerts in Russia, Japan, Hawaii: US

WASHINGTON: A massive 8.7 earthquake off Russia’s far east has prompted tsunami warnings of waves up to three meters possibly hitting the coasts of Russia and Hawaii, US authorities warned late Tuesday.

Waves one to three meters (3.3 to 10 feet) high could also threaten Japan and the US island territory of Guam, according to the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre based in Honolulu. – AFP
