ALOR SETAR:

Six more bodies, including that of a girl, believed to be from a boat carrying about 100 migrants that capsized yesterday along the Malaysia-Thailand border, have been found.

Kedah and Perlis Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director Romli Mustafa said this brings the number of bodies recovered to seven.

Romli said 13 migrants have been rescued, including three who were found at sea today.

He said two men were spotted in the Kuala Muda Teriang area and rescued by local fishing boats. A third man was rescued by a fisheries department boat.

An MMEA boat found the girl’s body while five more bodies of women were recovered at two separate locations before they were handed over to the police, he said in a statement.

Romli said the search and rescue operation, which has been expanded to cover 170 sq nautical miles, was suspended at 7pm today and would resume tomorrow morning.

The boat carrying about 100 migrants is believed to be one of three vessels carrying a total of about 300 people which capsized off Pulau Tarutao.
