PETALING JAYA:

About 70 witnesses are expected to testify at the inquest into the death of Sabah schoolgirl Zara Qairina Mahathir, which will be held over 18 days in September.

One of the main witnesses will be the pathologist who carried out the post-mortem examination, who will explain the cause of her death, the Attorney-General’s Chambers said in a statement.

The inquest will be held at the Kota Kinabalu coroner’s court on Sept 3-5, Sept 8-12, Sept 17-19, Sept 22-26, and Sept 29-30.

The statement said the proceedings will also be attended by Zara’s mother, while the Sabah Law Society will hold a watching brief.

Five teenage girls who have been charged with using abusive words against 13-year-old Zara will be represented by their lawyers at the inquest.

Zara was found unconscious at 4am on July 16 after allegedly falling from the third floor of her school’s hostel in Papar, Sabah. She died in hospital in Kota Kinabalu the next day.

Her body was exhumed on Aug 9 to allow for a post-mortem after allegations of bullying were raised.
