KUALA LUMPUR: Seven men have been arrested in connection with provocations during the eviction process in Kampung Sungai Baru on Thursday.
The suspects, aged between 15 and 52, were detained between Thursday and late last night after allegedly injuring Dang Wangi police chief Assistant Commissioner Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said one of the suspects was charged in court yesterday afternoon.
“The 26-year-old pleaded guilty and was fined RM1,500 by the court. The remaining six are still under remand to assist investigations, while we are also tracing several others believed to have instigated the provocation and unrest,” he told reporters.
Fadil said that none of the arrested men were residents of Kampung Sungai Baru.
“All those arrested were found to have home addresses outside the area, and we believe they were linked to protests against the eviction process,” he said.
Police have opened three investigation papers under Sections 186, 353 and 324 of the Penal Code.
On Sulizmie’s condition, Fadil said he was in stable health and is still receiving treatment.
Police have appealed to the public to provide any information or video recordings related to the incident to assist the investigation.
Earlier, it was reported that three men had been arrested after a scuffle with Sulizmie, leaving him bloodied during the eviction operation in Kampung Sungai Baru. https://www.nst.com.my/news/crime-courts/2025/09/1273595/updated-kampung-sg-baru-scuffle-3-nabbed-so-far
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the suspects were detained following the clash, which occurred during the enforcement of a court order to vacate homes.
He said that the eviction was carried out in line with legal provisions.
“Some quarters may feel unhappy with the decision, but I assure the public that security in Kampung Sungai Baru and the wider city remains stable. We advise everyone to remain calm, uphold peace and security, and verify information before taking any action,” he said.
Located near the Kuala Lumpur city centre, the redevelopment of Kampung Sungai Baru has faced a nine-year delay.
Discussions began in 2016 on plans to construct 328 residential units across 3.2 hectares. Negotiations with residents ran from 2016 to 2020, followed by land acquisition and approvals, which were finalised in 2021.
The acquisition involved 67 terraced houses and 14 apartment blocks.
Problems arose when a minority of residents expressed dissatisfaction with the developer’s joint venture agreement and the compensation offered.
Some opposed the RM400 per square foot compensation rate set by the Federal Territories Director of Lands and Mines, and have since refused to vacate, stalling the redevelopment works.
