KEPALA BATAS:

A fourth pig farm in the Tasek Gelugor area has been infected with African swine fever, but the outbreak remains under control, the veterinary department said today.

State veterinary director Dr Saira Banu Mohamed Rejab said other farms in Kampung Selamat, and in the rest of Seberang Perai remained free of the disease. “There hasn’t been a significant increase in the number of infected pigs,” she said.

She said 1,083 pigs have been culled at two of the four infected farms, with all carcasses buried on the farmers’ lands. Culling at the remaining two farms will begin tomorrow. However, inspections showed that many of the pigs have already died.

“Disposal of carcasses from the remaining two farms will be carried out on government-owned land in Seberang Perai Utara, with permission from Tenaga Nasional Bhd. However, we have to proceed with caution as the area is quite risky,” she said.

Estimated losses had not been calculated, she said. The total pig population across the four infected farms is about 6,000.
