CAIRO, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) — Three people were killed and 94 others injured after a train derailed in Egypt’s northwestern Matrouh governorate, the Health Ministry said Saturday.

The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, said the ministry.

According to the National Railways Authority, seven carriages of the train, which was traveling from Marsa Matrouh to Cairo, derailed, with two overturning. Technical teams and equipment were dispatched to clear the wreckage and restore service.

A technical committee will investigate the cause of the accident, the authority added.

Egypt’s railway network has long faced problems of outdated equipment and poor management, leading to frequent accidents. The country’s deadliest rail disaster occurred in 2002, when a fire on a Cairo-Luxor train in Giza’s Ayyat district killed over 380 people.
