Sibu police charge 212 drug addicts under Dangerous Drugs Act following Op Tapis Narkotik, with offenders facing RM5,000 fines or jail time.
SIBU: Police have charged 212 drug addicts in court following their arrest during a month-long anti-drug operation in the district.
The offenders, aged between 20 and 40, were charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Sibu district police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili confirmed the charges and outlined potential penalties for conviction.
“Offenders may face a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years jail term or both,” he said.
Convicted individuals will also be subject to a two-year supervision order under Section 38B of the same act.
Ten additional suspects remain in police remand to assist with ongoing investigations.
Zulkipli emphasized the operation’s continuation to track active drug addicts and curb substance abuse in Sibu.
He stressed that police will show no compromise for those involved in drug abuse activities.
Since Op Tapis Narkotik launched on October 6, police have charged 246 drug-related cases under various sections of drug legislation.
The cases include charges under Sections 39B, 39A(1), 12(3), and 39C(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Additional charges were filed under Section 30(3) of the Poisons Act 1952.
Zulkipli urged public cooperation in reporting drug-related activities to authorities.
He provided contact numbers for the Narcotics Crime Investigation Department hotlines.
