Two seismic stations are expected to be built in Segamat, Johor, to monitor earthquake activity following weak tremors that struck the district last month.
Segamat disaster management committee chairman Ezzuddin Sanusi said an application for their construction has been submitted to the state and federal governments, as there are currently no seismic stations operating in the district.
“The proposed stations will be equipped with small-movement seismometers, and suitable sites will be chosen away from areas of human activity such as roads,” Bernama reported him as saying in Segamat today.
He said the stations will be developed by the meteorological department, and their sites are still under discussion with agencies, including the minerals and geoscience department.
There are now 80 seismic stations nationwide, including six in Johor – two in Johor Bahru and one each in Kluang, Batu Pahat, Mersing and Kota Tinggi.
At least five mild quakes, with magnitude measuring between 2.5 and 4.1, were reported in Segamat in August.
Ezzuddin said 62 cases of minor damage to homes, and two to suraus, have been reported in the district.
“Most were cracks in walls and ceilings that did not compromise the buildings,” he said.
