KANGAR: Police have arrested two men suspected of stealing Telekom Malaysia (TM) cables in Taman Kemajuan here yesterday.
The incident occurred at 3.31am when a police team from the Kangar headquarters responded to a tip-off from a member of the public who reported suspicious activity in a residential lane.
Kangar police chief Assistant Commissioner Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop said police rushed to the location and were told that one of the suspects had fled towards the back of nearby houses.
“With the assistance of residents, a 31-year-old man was apprehended after he attempted to hide behind one of the houses in the area.
“During the arrest, the suspect acted aggressively, resulting in a scuffle that left him with an injury to his right leg. A further inspection found several tools used for cutting cables,” he said in a statement today.
Following the first arrest, police acted on information from residents and detained another suspect, aged 28, at a house in the same neighbourhood about 8.30am.
“Initial investigations found that both suspects are from Sungai Petani, Kedah, and have prior criminal records involving drugs and other offences.
“In this case, police seized a Proton Iswara car, a metal cable cutter, and three rolls of TM cables measuring about 30m. Losses to TM are estimated at RM2,000,” he added.
The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft which carries a jail term of up to seven years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
