PETALING JAYA:

Two secondary schools in have been partially closed due to an outbreak of influenza cases among students.

State health deputy Mat Lazim Mohammad said Sekolah Menengah Sains Pasir Puteh and Sekolah Menengah Sains Machang will hold classes online indefinitely for students in Form 1 to 4, subject to advice from the state health department, Kosmo reported.

He added that Form 5 students and teachers will continue having physical classes while strictly following the SOPs.

A total of 51 students in the Machang school have so far exhibited influenza symptoms, with the first case reported on Oct 5.

The Pasir Puteh school’s first influenza patient was recorded on Oct 7 with 58 other students later showing symptoms of the virus.

Health minister Dzulkefly Ahmad earlier said the majority of influenza cases detected nationwide had been mild, and that the situation remained under control despite a concerning number of outbreaks.

The ministry is also probing the death of a four-year-old boy in Samarahan, Sarawak, who had tested positive for influenza A.

Dzulkefly said the victim’s primary complication that led to his death was brain inflammation, which led to seizures.
