2 dead, 27 injured as student bus plunges into ravine in Philippines

MANILA: A bus carrying students fell into a ravine in Zamboanga del Sur province in the southern Philippines on Thursday, killing two and injuring 27 others, Xinhua reported, citing authorities.

Ronnie Villanueva, provincial disaster risk reduction and management officer, said the accident occurred at around 8am local time when the bus was en route to a military training camp.

Villanueva said a student died at the scene, while an elderly victim was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Twenty-seven others suffered various injuries.

An initial police investigation revealed that the bus’s brakes failed while it was negotiating a descending curve on the road, causing it to plunge off the cliff.

The college students were heading to the camp for a programme aimed at preparing them for service in the armed forces in the event of emergencies, and for reservists and potential officers. – BERNAMA
