2.67 Mln Households In Sarawak Benefitted From Agro MADANI Sales

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10 (Bernama) — A total of 2.67 million households in Sarawak have benefited from the MADANI Agro Sales programme organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM).

Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup said that since the programme was introduced in April 2023 until July, a total of 1,530 events have been held throughout the state, recording the attendance of 640,495 visitors with the participation of 21,058 local entrepreneurs.

He said that the programme, which is based on direct sales from farms to consumers, has generated a total sales value of RM23.53 million, in addition to providing savings of RM5.85 million on the price of goods to households in Sarawak.

“Through this initiative, the people have the opportunity to buy selected basic goods such as eggs, rice and so on at prices between 10 and 30 per cent lower than the market price, thus helping to reduce the cost of living and expand the market for local producers,” he said.

Arthur was responding to a question by Senator Roderick Wong Siew Lead on the progress of the MADANI Agro Sales programme in Sarawak during the oral question and answer session at Dewan Negara today.

Responding to a supplementary question by Senator Che Alias Hamid regarding the mechanism to expand the programme’s coverage, especially in rural areas and the B40 community, Arthur said there were no restrictions on the location of the event, in fact it had been held in the most remote areas such as Kampung Logongon in Pagalungan, Sabah.

“The results of the study showed that 45 per cent of the event locations were in rural areas, while 42 per cent were in urban areas with the B40 group being the biggest beneficiaries, at 83 per cent,” he said.

He said his party ensured that each programme had an impact on the community with locations usually chosen based on population density such as in People’s Housing Project (PPR) areas, mosque grounds and other public focal points.

Arthur said the ministry had also formulated five main strategies to ensure that the programme continued to have a positive impact on the people and entrepreneurs, including strengthening the system, training and competencies, determining more focused locations, digital advertising and the implementation of Agro MADANI e-sales.
