JOHOR BARU: Police have detained 16 youngsters for riding modified bicycles, known as “basikal lajak”, around the city.
Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said a special operation was carried out from 11am to 4pm on Sunday (Aug 31), led by an officer and seven personnel.
“The children, aged between 11 and 15, were detained and we also seized the 16 bicycles.
“A total of 16 summonses were issued for various offences such as having bicycles without brakes and bells, as well as without rear red lights,” he said in a statement on Monday (Sept 1).
He added that the seizures were made under Section 112(3) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
“The youngsters’ parents and legal guardians were called to the district police headquarters to have their statements recorded.
“They were also advised that stern action would be taken if the offences are repeated under Section 33(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which provides for a fine of up to RM20,000 or imprisonment of not more than five years if found guilty,” he added.
ACP Raub said once their statements were recorded, the youngsters were released and handed over to their respective families or guardians.
“I advise the public, especially those with underage children, to always monitor their activities to prevent them from getting involved in behaviour that could endanger themselves and other road users,” he said.
