KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4 (Bernama) — The Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) has described the 3.6 per cent annual labour productivity growth target under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) as realistic yet requires integrated implementation efforts in line with Malaysia’s goal of ranking among the top 12 in the IMD World Competitiveness Index by 2030.

MPC stated that improving labour productivity is a key foundation for sustainable economic growth, as well as strengthening reasonable wages and industrial resilience in the face of rising global cost pressures.

“The rise in global costs, driven by supply chain disruptions, labour shortages, and structural shifts in the economy, calls for a structural and systemic approach.

“Enhancing productivity is the best path to ensure economic resilience, price stability, and the well-being of the people,” said MPC director-general Datuk Zahid Ismail in a statement today.

He said as an initial step toward achieving the 13MP target, MPC is implementing the Industry-Based Academy Programme to bridge the gap between education and skills in line with industry needs. It is also developing the National Competitiveness Indicator Tracker, an analytical tool aimed at identifying areas for improvement in policies, regulations, and practices that influence Malaysia’s standing in the World Competitiveness Ranking (WCR).

“This approach has been implemented since last year and has significantly contributed to Malaysia’s 11-spot jump to 23rd position in the WCR 2025 report, emphasising that the approach will continue to support policymakers in responding more swiftly and accurately to implement improvements that contribute to the enhancement of the nation’s competitiveness.

MPC also plans to strengthen collaboration with ministries, agencies, and the private sector, particularly through the Special Taskforce to Facilitate Business (PEMUDAH) and 14 Productivity Nexus teams, to ensure that every improvement initiative has a meaningful impact on labour productivity, which in turn reinforces efforts to secure a spot among the world’s 12 most competitive nations by 2030.
