KUALA LUMPUR: Over 1,000 slopes nationwide are classified as high-risk and can collapse at any time, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has revealed.

He said the 1,087 slopes are among the 34,400 slopes nationwide.

The vast majority of the high-risk slopes are in Peninsular Malaysia (1,066), while the rest are in Labuan (13), Sabah (7), and Sarawak (1).

Overall, there are 27,072 slopes in Peninsular Malaysia, 4,178 in Sabah, 2,969 in Sarawak, and 181 in Labuan.

Nanta said this after a briefing on the ministry’s Disaster Operation Room (BiGBen) today.

The BiGBen system allows the ministry to monitor disasters, including the northeast monsoon.

He added that there were plans to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology into the system.

“Our role is to provide technical support to other agencies, such as the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), at both state and district levels.

“The information we receive is fairly accurate, and we get it almost in real time because our staff are stationed at district offices,” he said.

He said the monitoring system was not yet fully operational in Peninsular Malaysia, and efforts were underway to expand its coverage.

Meanwhile, Nanta said the ministry had sent technical officers to Sabah after the recent landslides and floods, which have claimed 13 lives and forced thousands to evacuate.
