KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 19 (Bernama) — Three awards at the prestigious Enlit Asia 2025 international conference and exhibition in Bangkok recently reaffirm Tenaga Nasional Bhd’s (TNB) leadership in innovation and sustainability in the power and energy sector.
Of the three awards, two were for its AI Predictive Maintenance for 11kV Cables and one for the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project at Pulau Tenaga Hijau (PTH), supplying power to remote islands not connected to the main electrical grid.
These recognitions undoubtedly enhance TNB’s standing as a forward-looking utility that is actively driving the energy transition in line with global decarbonisation trends.
The PTH project, which is located at Pulau Perhentian and Pulau Redang in Terengganu, was named the grand winner in the Energy Storage Project category.
The project, which features the adoption of clean energy sources and renewables, enables more efficient energy storage while supporting a low-carbon energy system in island areas, reflecting TNB’s commitment to driving energy transformation through digital and sustainable technologies.
By 2027, the energy generation mix for Pulau Perhentian and Pulau Redang is projected to comprise 22 per cent renewable sources, with the remaining 78 per cent coming from liquefied natural gas.
Currently, both islands rely on diesel generators.
The success of the Pulau Tenaga Hijau project highlights TNB’s ability to implement transformative solutions in challenging environments such as remote islands.
Equally important is the recognition of TNB’s AI Predictive Maintenance initiative, which reflects how digital technologies can enhance operational efficiency and customer service reliability.
The AI Predictive Maintenance for 11kV Cables, which leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to identify high-risk cables for early maintenance, earned second place in two categories, namely Power Utility Project of the Year and Transmission and Distribution Networks.
TNB’s AI-powered predictive maintenance initiative transforms the management of its extensive 11kV underground cable network, traditionally affected by numerous breakdowns annually.
Successfully piloted in Selangor with over 80 per cent accuracy in predicting failures up to two years in advance, the initiative has reduced cable failures by 15-20 per cent, significantly improving service reliability.
By deploying AI to predict and prevent outages, the utility company is moving from reactive maintenance to proactive infrastructure management.
Besides cost savings, these initiatives also strengthen resilience, ensuring Malaysian households and businesses enjoy a more reliable and secure electricity supply.
This achievement also reinforces TNB’s role as a key enabler of Malaysia’s Net Zero 2050 aspiration while positioning the company as a regional leader in modern utility practices.
Enlit Asia is an annual conference and exhibition for the power and energy sector, showcasing expert knowledge, innovative solutions and foresight from industry leaders, coherent with ASEAN’s strategy to achieve a smooth transition towards a low-carbon energy future.
The event’s Power and Energy Awards represent the regional benchmark for excellence, celebrating success and recognising the people and businesses pushing boundaries and driving the Southeast Asian power and electricity sector forward.
The awards distinguish those planning and implementing projects that significantly improve business practices across the key themes of Enlit Asia, ranging from power generation, transmission and distribution, the smart grid, renewable energy, the energy revolution, innovation, and individual contribution.
Enlit Asia 2025 attracted over 12,000 attendees with the exhibition floor featuring 350 exhibitors, showcasing advanced technologies across the power value chain.
