The New Straits Times’ ‘Heard The News? Read with Me’ initiative featured a special guest reader, in the form of Raja Muda of , Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

The crown prince, during his visit to Balai Berita yesterday, consented to being a reader for a news piece, which would be featured in the next day’s edition of the NST.

Tengku Amir Shah said the initiative was a commendable one as it can help improve the command of English and boost general knowledge among Malaysians of all ages.

“Mastery of English is vital in an increasingly competitive and borderless world. Initiatives like this can help personal development in one’s pursuit of knowledge, which in turn would create a more informed and confident society,” he said.

‘Heard The News? Read with Me’ was officially launched on August 29th, 2025.

The initiative allows users to scan a QR code in the NST’s print or e-paper edition to listen to the narrated version of a news article.

The feature aims to improve English proficiency and improve general knowledge by providing correct pronunciation, assist non-native speakers, support those with visual impairments or reading challenges, and offer access to news for auditory learners.
