Immigration DG vows to weed out 'bad apples' amid counter-setting scandal

KUALA LUMPUR: The Immigration Department has pledged to continue rooting out rogue officers following the recent “counter-setting” scandal uncovered by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) under Op Rentas.

Director-general Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said the department would not hesitate to take action against personnel found breaching integrity, stressing that disciplinary enforcement is a core pillar of the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

He pointed out that between 2022 and 2025, the department handled hundreds of internal disciplinary cases, many linked to misconduct at the nation’s entry points.

“From 2024 alone, 254 cases were resolved, and another 199 this year. So far, 60 officers have been dismissed from service. These figures show that we are serious in ridding the department of bad apples,” he told the New Straits Times.
