Malaysia Highlights ASEAN Chairmanship, VMY2026 At Chennai Reception

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 18 (Bernama) — Malaysia emphasised its leadership role as ASEAN Chair in 2025 while inviting Indian travellers to explore Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VMY2026), at a reception celebrating the nation’s 68th National Day and 62nd Malaysia Day hosted by its Consulate General in Chennai, India.

At the reception, the Consul General of Malaysia, Saravana Kumar Kumaravasagam, reflected on Malaysia’s role as ASEAN Chair, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to advancing regional peace, prosperity, and unity.

Saravana also highlighted the upcoming VMY2026 initiative, warmly inviting Indian travellers, especially from Tamil Nadu and South India, to experience Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and diverse tourism offerings, according to a statement issued by the Consulate General in Chennai on Thursday.

The celebration was graced by the Minister of Milk and Dairy Development, Government of Tamil Nadu, Thiru T. Mano Thangaraj, it said.

In his address, Thiru commended the longstanding friendship between Malaysia and India, particularly with Tamil Nadu, and expressed confidence that ties will continue to grow stronger in the years ahead.

The evening programme featured the national anthems of Malaysia and India, a special video presentation on Malaysia’s tourism attractions, a ceremonial cake-cutting, and a dinner reception showcasing authentic Malaysian cuisine.

The occasion served as an excellent platform for networking and strengthening bilateral and people-to-people ties, said the Consulate General.

This annual celebration holds deep significance, commemorating both Malaysia’s independence in 1957 and the formation of the Malaysian federation in 1963.

The Consulate General said it remains committed to further deepening cultural, economic, and diplomatic cooperation between Malaysia and India.

The event brought together more than 250 distinguished guests, including members of the diplomatic corps, senior government officials, business leaders, media representatives, and friends of Malaysia.
