Sabah floods worsen, over 3,100 evacuees in 6 districts

The number of evacuees at temporary relief centres in Sabah has increased by around 7% from yesterday.

Bernama reported that 3,134 people from 916 families were housed at temporary relief centres in Sabah this morning, compared to 2,919 people from 814 families yesterday evening.

The Sabah state disaster management committee said the evacuees were being housed at 27 relief centres across six districts: Beaufort, Membakut, Penampang, Papar, Putatan and Sipitang.

“Evacuee numbers in Sipitang are on the rise, while figures remain unchanged in Beaufort, Papar and Putatan. Meanwhile, there has been a decrease in Penampang and Membakut.”

A total of 127 villages have been affected by the floods afflicting Sabah since Sept 9.

The meteorological department has forecast thunderstorms in several parts of Sabah this morning and afternoon, with further thunderstorms expected in parts of the interior at night.

Meanwhile, the Sarawak state disaster management committee reported that eight people from a single family were still seeking shelter at the Dewan Suarah relief centre in Marudi, which opened at 2pm yesterday.

A total of 103 people from 27 families housed at the relief centre at SJK(C) Keetee in Long Lama, Telang Usan, were allowed to return home after the centre was closed at 4pm yesterday.
