53 schools in Sabah, Sarawak affected by floods, says ministry

: The Education Ministry (MoE) is taking steps to ensure preparedness, safety and the well-being of pupils, teachers and the wider education community, particularly in flood-affected areas of Sabah and Sarawak.

In a statement today, the MoE said that the Sabah Education Department and the Sarawak Education Department are currently channelling emergency assistance to all educational institutions impacted by the floods.

As of 8am today, a total of 53 educational institutions in Sabah and Sarawak had been affected, involving 24 primary schools and five secondary schools in Sabah, as well as 22 primary schools and two secondary schools in Sarawak.

“Six temporary relief centres are operating within MoE educational premises — five in Sabah and one in Sarawak,” the statement read.

The ministry also extended its condolences to the families of four pupils who lost their lives in the floods and landslides in several parts of Sabah.

“We pray that the families will be granted strength and resilience in facing this tragedy,” the MoE said.

On Monday, nine people were killed in two separate landslides in Kota Kinabalu and Papar following continuous heavy rain since Sunday night. – BERNAMA
