PETALING JAYA:

The government has identified 1,699.68ha of land on Pulau Carey in Kuala Langat to be developed as a third port, menteri besar Amirudin Shari said today.

He said this comprised 1,011.71ha of seabed land managed by the State Development Corporation (PKNS) and 687.96ha of coastal land owned by Yayasan Selangor.

Amirudin said the details would be finalised within a month, and a proposal would be submitted to the transport ministry to select a developer.

Adding that the state government would play an active role in both developing and managing the progress of the Pulau Carey port, he said the project would be a major catalyst for Selangor’s growth over the next 20 to 30 years.

“This initiative will provide the state with a sustainable long-term stream of revenue. Furthermore, it offers new potential for PKNS as a key driver of the state’s economic development.

“It will also strengthen the financial position of Yayasan Selangor, enabling it to continue its mission of funding educational and state institutions,” Bernama reported him as saying after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding between PKNS and Yayasan Selangor.

Amirudin said PKNS would act as the state government’s representative in holding the shares and ownership rights for the new port.

“The difference with the third port and Port Klang is that we will have active participation and involvement in terms of both the construction and its operation,” he said.

The signing of the memorandum of understanding today formalises a cooperation between PKNS and Yayasan Selangor to plan a new, sustainable and competitive development on the latter’s land in Pulau Carey for the proposed third port.

The initiative also includes assessing suitable and viable joint-venture business models, as well as outlining the development terms for the next phase.

At the signing ceremony, PKNS was represented by its group CEO Mahmud Abbas and Yayasan Selangor by its CEO Raja Nazirin Shah Raja Mohamad.
